Bring back the California Jam!

Discussion:
California
I live in New York but this is probably covered by California Law.
Where do I start? When I was 16, I taped a mega-concert off the radio that was bigger than Woodstock in a lot of ways. I'm talking about the 1974 California Jam mega-concert. Turns out I'm recognized as the only person in the whole world who did.
The production was done by ABC/TV, who the story goes destroyed the original masters in 1979 thus leaving me with the only viable copy of the California Jam Sound. My copies always sounded better than theirs did anyway, because I was the only one who MAGNETIZED the Signal in the first place. What good is a mega-concert without the SOUND?
Needless to say with an astounding 200,000 ppl in attendance today there is GREAT demand for my Recordings. I've already scored a major media piece in the Ontario Daily Bulletin entitled One day in 1974 ...
I was recently in contact with Bob Coburn of the KLOS ROCKLINE Show. I sent him one of the 3 CDs. After hearing it and seeing some of my acquired videos, he's greatly interested in doing a rebroadcast of the Show from my materials. It's really a thrill and a delight to listen to these Recordings as I unknowingly created the Biggest Musical in the World way back in 1974.
I firmly believe that if such a rebroadcast took place over KLOS, it would be one of the Greatest Moments, if not the Greatest Moment in California History.
On his advice, I wrote to all the publishing companies who cover the Eight rock groups who played there. I was told Jackson Browne of the Eagles was excited about this Project also, and that he would "rubber stamp" anything that came his way about the California Jam. You see, I feel sorry for the eight major bands who played there so I just wind up sending them the materials because they don't have it themselves. You'd think something of the MAGNITUDE of California Jam and everyone would've made a BACK-UP Copy for themselves but no. Only I made a copy of the simulcast, which today winds up to be the only copy of this Show.
I get emails practically every day from ppl everywhere seeking out the California Jam materials from me. I hate to dissappoint all of them, but this is what I have to do.
So, due to the incompetence of ABC/TV, it was left to one 16 year old amateur fan in the Bronx, New York to save something of the MAGNIFICENCE of the California Jam. I'm on the phone with ABC/TV Intellectual Property Rights last week. They tell me exactly, "we're not going to be granting permission for that." So, in other words what they're saying is the whole world has to suffer and remain in ignorance because of OUR incompetence in the 70s.
Can you see this is a terrible loss-A travesty for all Music Lovers-Music History being stifled...
What legally can be done about this? I want to make a major California Jam Revival out of my Recordings. Is it possible to create a Consortium to get this done, or what else can be done? I work in a harzardous profession. If I die suddenly this whole California Jam Revival Concept dies right along with me. The Recordings the comprise the biggest musical in the world will be lost forever.
I was even told by an internet iStation that they will NOT permit me to rebroadcast the California Jam without the proper letter of permission. It looks like ABC/TV is going to try and stifle this forever too.
Can anything be done to bring the Importance of my California Jam Recordings to the forefront, or is this whole issue going to die right along with me? I am in no financial position to buy the Rights to these individual compositions even if I were asked to by the Publishing Companies.
Thank you for examining every single possible angle of Copyright Law as pertains to this and keeping in mind the Importance and Significance of my Work. These recordings are better than 3 hours long, and they are WAY better than Classic Rock is. I don't want this whole California Jam Revival Project to die along with me, because that is the direction it's headed in.
There MUST be a way, SOME way to bring back the biggest musical in the world, the California Jam because this is what everybody wants. It would be win-win for everyone.
Answer:
The first count on which you're wrong is this does not conform to the California forum. It falls under Trademark and copyright laws of the United States. It's a federal case.
And ABC, IF they have property rights to the concert, and that has yet to be established, can tell you no which is their right. This has nothing to do with the right of the people to listen to rearranged electric impules on tape but the right of property of which ABC has ownership.
So, either save up about $1.5 million (excluding legal fees) to buy the rights from ABC or find a way to strike a deal.
Answer:
That's just it, BelizeBreeze. They're TELLING me no. I guess the whole world is gonna be lose-lose on the matter.
Thanks for correcting me on the forum of the litigation; Federal instead of California. I certainly don't have $1.5 Million to go to court with this, I don't even have the "." So I guess this whole thing dies with me.
Gotta admit; this is One for the Books. I'm not giving up yet. Maybe someone else here has another idea, another angle. Maybe the Legend of the California Jam will somehow prevail over the incompetence of the Disney mouse in this one case.
Thank you for your input. Please keep in mind I'm doing this for the Benefit of Humanity.

Hey Caljamscott. Even though I just vented on your post on my thread, I was curious and found this thread you made. Any chance I can get a copy of your recording, I'd love to have it in my collection. Have you digitalized it onto an MP3?

There MUST be a way, SOME way to bring back the biggest musical in the world, the California Jam because this is what everybody wants. It would be win-win for everyone. Gee...Here is a novel Idea....How about negotiate to sell them the recorded "concert" ( maybe for a modest fee...seeing as how you don't want to impede on anyones loss of "musical history" and be a participant of the "travesty" that you claim)....with the stipulation that It be "replayed" in simulcast for the benefit of a charity....OR BETTER YET...the victims of Hurricane Katrina?
The media should eat that up....and yes, you may profit also ...
Sounds win-win to me...even for those less fortunate.

Sounds win-win to me...even for those less fortunate. Hey StickyFingers I'm all with it! Anything to bring back the California Jam and I'm all with it. Wanna work with me?
Now something ELSE pops up. Let me explain this...wanna waste half an hour looking for the Origin of the supposed ABC/TV California Jam copyright? Just click onto and enter the phrase "California Jam" and I can practically guarantee you now that you'll come up with nothing but AIR for a half hour.
At least that's what I come up with anyway! Nothing but A-I-R.
Let's do the Katrina thing and hey, did I tell you I even have another musical here bigger than the Beatles--that is Nuclear Warrior Copyright 1984 and it's my Own Creation. So I'm multi-talented on many levels and I also have the world's most unique Super 8 Films and the world's Most Unique Films in general altogether. Something must be done.

You didn't know I was as talented as I am, ay?
That's just the thing. I'm scared to distribute the materials because I may be doing something I'm not supposed to be doing. Incidentally, due to the inherent BEAUTY of my World Exclusive 1974 California Jam Recordings, I guarantee you won't have any "collection" after you hear this thing a couple of times
And please, no more driving 69 in a 30 MPH zone!
Thanks for asking about California Jam anyway; I'm open to any and all suggestions and angles on how we're going to get this thing to forefront where it belongs. With the prospect of Katrina Help and Charity maybe we can do it this time. Right now the legend of the California Jam is just wasting away even though a LOT of ppl want to groove on it again. What good is a mega-concert like California Jam without the SOUND? Only I have the all-important SOUND and I have a Doozy of a Sound of the California Jam mega-concert.
Look up California Jam on Google and you'll see my name connected with it right on down the Line...

I am sure If they agree..you will work out the particulars with them.
Just seemed like a great idea...Try and "run" with it. As many could/would benefit from it.
Good luck

Good luck If you've got half an hour to waste click onto enter "California Jam" and you'll probably find nothing but A-I-R there like I did.
There MUST be a technicality I have these ppl on. Abandonment, incompetence, failure to provide, failure to register at the LOC, something ...
As All California Awaits the Verdict ...
Answer:
Hello again,
If you could work it out with the evil comglomerate to publicly credit that your copy is real...it would be a great service to music itself. Best of luck with that, I hope it goes well.
And I have heard part of it. On the radio a few years back. I already know it's an awesome event. That's why i'm politely asking for a copy of it.
I know there's no way to prove to you that I won't distribute it to anyone else, but I know how real my word is, and I give it to you that I would just like to download it into my MP3 player so that I can have the satisfaction of keeping it forever.
I think as there's no money exchange for it, I don't see why it can't be transfered to MP3 format and downloaded through a service like Shareaza or some other file-sharing program. Or even a direct file transfer through an instant messaging program between me and you so no one else will get it.
I am asking as nicely and honestly as I possibly can b/c I do know how great that tape's contents really are.
And between two true music fans, it would be a beautiful thing.
Just let me know what you think.
Answer:
I know this, SAABDRIVER. California Jam and the way I did it i/s the most awesome of the awesome and the Most High. I listen to it every day.
Answer:
So, you're going to let me get a copy of the tape for my collection? PLease say yes!

Subject: (AP) Ontario, CA: Police Arrest Man at Ontario Museum
(AP) 28 January 2001 - Sheriff's deputies were called to the Ontario Museum of History and Art Monday, after a mentally ill man refused to leave until his collection of radio tapes were put on display. Officials say Scott A. Lifshine of New York entered the museum around 1 o'clock, carrying a shopping bag full of reel-to-reel tapes and video cassettes. Lifshine, 42, claimed to be the only person on earth in possession of recordings of the momentous "California Jam" concert, that took place at the Ontario Motor Speedway in the 1970's. When told that his tapes were not rare, or relevant to the museum's exhibits, Lifshine became angry and refused to leave.
Deputy Ronald Juerst described Lifshine as a man with "several mental illnesses," who has a history of confrontations in public places in New York. Records show Lifshine was evaluated following an arrest in 1981. He is described as a "paranoid schizophrenic with delusions of grandeur." He told sheriff’s department interviewers that he is the "greatest rock star and movie star in the world," and that he "controls all Internet newsgroups." Newsgroups are bulletin boards available online which cover thousands of topics. Lifshine carried an I.D. card that lists his home address as a halfway house for the mentally ill in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Lifshine was released to his wife Monday afternoon, who noted that he had not taken his medication for three days -- a factor which may have led to his outburst. No one was hurt during the incident.
