Digitizing analog media / digital backups
Discussion: state - WA 1 Can I (legally) digitize audio and video tape recordings for my own use? specifically I want to convert some cassettes into mp3 files on CD for use in my car that only has a cd player. 1a Also, I have some VHS videos I want to put onto DVD. 2) Can I make backup copies of CD and DVD? I want to save the originals away in a safe place so if any damage occurs, it will be to the copy. thanks in advance Answer: state - WA 1 Can I (legally) digitize audio and video tape recordings for my own use? specifically I want to convert some cassettes into mp3 files on CD for use in my car that only has a cd player. 1a Also, I have some VHS videos I want to put onto DVD. 2) Can I make backup copies of CD and DVD? Of course, if you do make such backups, to stay perfectly legal you need to retain the original media, and you may not transfer, sell, rent, give away, or dispose of either the original media OR the copy without also transfering, selling, renting, giving away, or disposing of the corresponding original or copy.
