Protecting "anonymous" work (publishing under a pseudonym)?
Discussion: What is the name of your state? NY My best friend wants to publish a small book about his war experiences (Afghanistan & Iraq) but does not want to use his real name and would prefer to publish under a pseudonym. I will help him with website setup etc. How can he protect his work and also protect his privacy at the same time? Thanks! Mike Answer: What is the name of your state? The copyright office doesn't care either -- you can file a form TX with the copyright office to register your copyright, and can even use your pseudonymous name to register, so that not even the copyright office will know the real name. As long as you put down the correct countries of birth and origin, you can use any name (or no name at all) when you register the work with the copyright office. How publishers will deal with this, I don't know -- but the copyright office can deal with this just fine. You will get a different duration of copyright under a pseudonym than you would under a your own name -- 120 years from date of publication v. life of author + 70 years -- but current copyright durations are so long anyway, like that's going to matter.
