books on tape

Discussion:
I live in California. I want to record people reading a book onto a tape and then re-sell it to them. Does this violate the copywrite of any given book?
An individual would purchase a book and then record their voice reading the book to personalize it.
The way I see it, value of the tape would not be the content of the book but rather the individual recording it.
Answer:
Huh? After I read all but a few RARE ones they get sold at the next garage sell why would people pay for this service?

From a practical standpoint, however, if all you are doing is recording people reading books that they have purchased, and you are not making copies of the recording for resale, then it is unlikely that anyone would notice or take action against you. Doesn't mean that it isn't illegal, just that from a practical standpoint, the chances of getting sued are low. It's a risk, but you can decide whether or not its a risk you want to take.
If you start making copies of the taped books and selling them on eBay, or otherwise doing this to provide a cheaper method for getting books on tape, then you are much more likely to get sued.
But, like I said, from a strict legal perspective, none of this is legal without a license.
