Do I Need Copywright Permission?
Discussion: What is the name of your state? Maine I facilitate a monthly writers group/club and we hold discussions on related topics. At our next meeting I plan to discuss hooks and want to distribute an article as a visual aide and learning tool to my club members for this. I am not seeking financial gain of any kind. I will not be using any portion of the article for my own works. I only want to use it as an educational tool because it presents some very good points. Do I need permission for this? From a hypertechnical legal perspective, probably yes. From a practical perspective, no. Now, if you are making hundreds of copies, that would be different from a dozen -- but generally small printings for personal use (or use by a small group), even if technically infrigning, are so unlikely to command the attention of the copyright holder that for all practical purposes, the use is a fair use of the work.
