matt A title cannot be copyrighted, but a title may be trademarked. In general, it would be okay to call your documentary "the sopranos," so long as it was just a "play on words" and that you were not using the name to "confuse" people into watching your documentary. You might want to talk briefly with a trademark attorney when you choose your title, just to make sure.
