I need to take a picture of a fire truck in the purpose of selling it later (the picture not the fire truck of course).
If I take a photo from a public place (sidewalk let's say) do I need a permission from the fire department to publish it?

Yep. Most municipalities and other government jurisdictions make it illegal to profit from property they own. On the other hand, many are very generous and will sign a release for free. Contact the city/county attorney's office or the fire department for more info.

I disagree with racer72. If you take the photo from a public vantage point, you can resell the picture without any problems. However, it is probably best to ask for and obtain permission, just os there is no possibility of a misunderstanding later.
