Discussion: What is the name of your state?I am in California and my name is vista lee! I am a college student and I am graduating this quarter now. Unfortunately, one of my lab report was sent to Student Judicial Affair dept for suspicious Plagiarism. I checked my lab report over and over again. And I found that I was missing the quotation marks on some paragraphs. However, the lab report as a whole was all written by my own words. I have given the source(web address) at the end of the paragraphs but I forgot to put the quotation marks. This is my last quarter. I really want a degree and I don't want to be kicked out at the last quarter. Please help??????? How can I work around this? This is one of the paragraphs: Bacillus is Gram-positive bacterium which is everywhere in nature such as soil, water, and airborne dust. Some species are natural flora in the human intestines. When grown on blood agar, Bacillus produces large, spreading, gray-white colonies with irregular margins. A unique characteristic of this bacterium is its ability to produce endospores when environmental conditions are stressful. The only other known spore-producing bacterium is Clostridium. Therefore, Bacillus is quite important in the field where people study endospores. () SEE I HAVE THE LINK AT THE END BUT I JUST FORGOT THE QUOTATION MARKS. Answer: Academic plagarism is a serious matter. Yes you could be kicked out of school, but it would be unlikely for you to be kicked out for improper punctuation, ALONE. Did your prof. speak to you before refering this to the board? Did you 'lift' material from websites or other sources to create your report? I think you should review carefully the style manuals citation methods that are relevant to your discipline. If you don't know you should ask. Be proactive: ask (prof) what is wrong and how to correct it. If you were simply negligent, and not doing this out of malice, it is likely that you can get this resolved. You should ask yourself this first: 'Do I feel guilty about this paper' Answer: I asked myself and I did or do know that I know what I was doing. I did not intend to copy other people's material without giving credit. I just forgot the quotation marks. However, you can see I provided the web-site at the end of the paragraph. I forgot to put the quotation marks but I did put the web-address at the end! Can this be considered as improper punctuation????? Did your prof. speak to you before refering this to the board? NO, he turn my report on the last day of this quarter. I turn in the paper on 11/21/05 and he turned this to SJA on 12/19/05. I heard that the prof. doesn't need to tell me anything before I turn any paper in. Did you 'lift' material from websites or other sources to create your report? Just some paragraphs. They are used just for background info. It is not the essential material. It will not even hurt my report even I take them out completely. Most of my report was written by my own words. I think you should review carefully the style manuals citation methods that are relevant to your discipline. If you don't know you should ask. Be proactive: ask (prof) what is wrong and how to correct it. I believe I know the proper format. Cuz I did put quotation marks for one of the paragraphs. I just forgot to put them on for the rest for some reasons I really don't know why? If you were simply negligent, and not doing this out of malice, it is likely that you can get this resolved. I believe that I was just negligent. It is simply a careless mistake. However, this is my 2nd time referral to SJA. The first time I know that I did something wrong and I admit the mistake I made. But this time is really just a careless mistake You should ask yourself this first: 'Do I feel guilty about this paper' I don't feel guilty cuz I did provide the source of the material that I have taken but I just forgot the quotation marks! I did not intend to steal the material without giving credit to the original author!! Answer: While I hope everything works out for you, this isn't a legal question -- this is a matter of school policy, not a matter of law. Answer: Academic plagarism is a serious matter.
