Ok Here is what I would like to do. I've done tons of research and can't find an straight answer.
I would like to write and perform an adamptation of "It's a Wonderful Life" Now this performance would be for our church. We would not profit on any way from it.
It's A Wonderful Life is based on a short story called "The Greatest Gift" which is still under copyright.
I basicly want to take the story and make it a musical and add some emphasis to the chirstian elements of the story.
Now, can I just do this or do I need to get permission?
I don't mind getting permission and paying rights and all.

Now, can I just do this or do I need to get permission? Of course you need permission. You will need to contact the copyright holders, and obtain a license to legally write and perfrom the work you describe.
