I am working on a project where a group of musicians improvises music along to a movie playing on a screen behind us. I'm pretty sure that doing this, even if we don't charge admission, would qualify as copyright infringement. My question is, is there any way to do this legally?

Well you need performance rights for both the movie and the music you are performing. Performing in front of a movie probably isn't going to be covered by the normal PRO licenses. You'll have to give more details.

I'll do my best to give all the details you need. The music will all be improvised so no need to get any rights there. The setup will be this: At a music venue, a movie will be projected onto a big screen right above the stage, while the movie is playing, we'll be improvising music along to it.

Are there any other specific details that you need? Thanks for the reply. If either you or the venue has the right to "publicly perform" the movie -- i.e., play it for an audience -- then that's the only permission you would need for your specific situation.

Thanks for the reply. I guess my question would then be, how does one go about getting rights to show a movie? We're not going to be making much if any $ from this so we might have to figure out a different route if it's very expensive.
