A software company is saying that I violated copyright law because I installed their software on 2 of my HOME machines even though I was only supposed to do it on one. Isn't there some kind of protection for home users? What can I do?

Did you read the complete licensing agreement when you installed the software? As stated in a software manual and I quote: You must accept the enclosed License Agreement before you can use this product. The product is licensed as a single product. Its component parts may not be spearated for use on more than one computer. If you do not accept the terms of the license agreement, you should promptly return the product for a refund. End of quote. The software manufacturer has every right to pursue prosecution against you. I would suggest removing the product from one of your machines.
