OK....I'm not a businessperson, or a lawyer. I'm just a regular guy. But I have an idea that several companies out there could use, and really benefit from. I don't know if it is really a patentable idea.
How can I pitch the idea to companies,without them taking it and running with it?

Well, first and foremost you need to copyright everything in detail. description, what it is and what it does, etc. Put a big (c) the date and your name,
Then, get yourself a good non disclosure agreement. (try the legal forms on this website) and make sure all parties with whom you speak sign this.
