My 14 year old daughter used Kazaa , apparently more than I thought , using my Cable line ... ... of course , she was caught , and now I have been offered a settlement from negotiators from the RIAA for about $3,000 ..from what I've seen , I have no recourse other than pay , since I want this all behind me . From what I've read , I may be libel for more money if I go forward and try to fight this ( not to mention lawyer fees ) ...does anyone have any advice , other than don't download music files illegally ? thanks ..

You are right -- if you decide to fight this, you will almost certainly end up spending a lot more than $3000 -- attorney's fees alone could be staggering. Further, you could be liable for up to $150,000 for each and every copyrighted work that was illegally downloaded.
You can check with the Electronic Frontier Foundation on the web to see what they have to say about these settlements, and you should also speak with a local attorney who can review the settlement agreement and make sure that you and your daughter are protected if you do pay the settlement.
But you'll almopst certainly be better off paying the settlement rather than getting into a protracted and expensive court battle that you stand a pretty fair chance of losing...
