Product Modification

Discussion:
What is the name of your State? Missouri
My question is hopefully simple and straightforward?
If I purchase a product and then modify it, can I legally sell the product for a profit?

In general, the "first sale doctrine" basically says that once you legally acquire a particular object, you are free to do with that object what you wish. However, there may be some limitations, depending on what exactly the object is and what modifications you make to it.
Further, this assumes that the item was acquired during or after a retail purchase. If the item was acquired at a wholesale level, or if there are any other contractual obligations existing, there may also be contractual limitations as well.

What I am hoping to do is similar to what this person is asking. For instance, I am thinking of buying some standard pots for plants at retail in addition to purchasing some officially licensed stickers with a college logo at retail. I am then thinking of putting the stickers on the pots, putting a layer of clearcoat on the pots and then selling these "college planters" at a local craft show. Would this be infringing on any trademarks. My first impression is the answer is "no" since I am legally purchasing the stickers at retail. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think you meant to add on to a different thread -- you should probably start your own thread, then people searching later won't be confused.
