My team and I wish to do a few plays that are based upon original movies. What process would we have to go thru and what permits would we have to obtain (if any)?

Start by contacting the producers of the movies you are interested in copying -- they should know who you need to contact for permission (and possible payment of royalties). You will need permission from the copyright owner to create a derivative work.
