Screenplay question

Discussion:
My state is Colorado.
If I use information from books, or one book in particular, as a main but not sole source for a biography-type screenplay about actual historical, deceased persons, does that obligate me or a film producer to give credit and/or payment to the author(s) of the book(s)?

Just add water. And stir occasionally.
Answer:
All right, a 1,001st apology. I was reading replies in the longer thread (this one), and didn't see the answers in the other thread, thanks to my blankety-blank duplicate post.
The book I have in mind is a biography--we're talking nonfiction here. A lot of the information it contains is available from other sources, particularly the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution. The author, of course, has done the gruntwork, making it easier for someone like me to find the interesting and crucial historial quotes by the subject of the biography, as well as a concise timeline of events. I think most if not all the information in the book is probably available from public domain sources.
Answer:
My response:
What's the subject of your screenplay? Civil War?
IAAL
Answer:
The Wright Brothers. Does the subject affect the answer to my query?
Answer:
It could have but in this case the only caution I would give you is that if you reference something in the book, MAKE DAMN SURE you have other sources of supporting documentation to support your premis that the incident actually occurred.
Otherwise, you will find yourself facing a copyright infringement suit.
