temporary copyright
Discussion: What is the name of your state? Illinois I am a singer, songwitter: is it true that you can send a copy of your ( ie music cds) in an envelope, addressed back to yourself and as long as it is not opened and it has "its post office marks" on it... It is legal for a temporary copyright? Answer: See the answer to your other question. When you do this, you are doing what is commonly known as a "poor man's copyright." However, this doesn't give you any rights that you don't already automatically have. What it CAN do for you is help to establish ownership and date of creation, if you ever end up in litigation. Again, as soon as you create something -- a creative work "fixed in a tangible medium" -- it is covered by copyright. Registering the copyright gives you some additional remedies in the event of infringement and helps to establish ownership in litigation, but gives you no additional rights over an unregistered copyright.
