Is this infringement?
Discussion: What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? OK SEveral years ago, I bought a set of copyrighted house plans and used them to build my house. After the project was complete, I gatherred up all the copies that had been used by subcontractors and stashed them in the attic. Now a friend is saying she would like to borrow them (not copy, just borrow all copies) use them to build her own house, and return all copies to me. In addition to not being thrilled aboutthe prospect of having my unique house copied I have a question: would we be infringing the copyright of the company I originally bought the plans from? The paperwork that came with the plans doesn't address this. Thanks Jo Answer: "would we be infringing the copyright of the company I originally bought the plans from?" Unless you have some sort of contract with the copyright owner to the contrary, no. Under the first sale doctrine, you can do whatever you want with your copy of the plans -- lend them, give them away -- as long as you do not reproduce them in any way.
