i rewrote a large portion of the lyrics to a song which is copyrighted (and was put out by a band on a major record label).
how could i go about becoming registered as one of the writers of this modified version of the song? do i have to contact the original writer, or his management, directly?

You have to contact whoever owns the copyright to the music and obtain a license or permission to create a derivative work. If you get permission, you could then register a copyright in the new derivative work.

it is not meant to be a parody, but i suppose if someone thought my modifications were horrible, well . . . maybe "parody" is in the eye of the beholder!
