I am on an L-1 . The I-94 date stamped at the port of entry is about a year more than the Visa expiry / Petition end date.
Can the I-94 date be later than the Visa Expiry/ Petition end date or is it a mistake by the immigration official who stamped the I-94 date ?

It is perfectly fine. Many a times the I-94 exp date is beyond visa exp date. That means u can be in USA until ur I-94 expires.
But, if u leave the country after the visa expires, u will need to get a new visa to reenter. Hope this helps!!

CIS approval notices, I-94s and visa expirations do not always match.

Some countries have a reciprocity issue where the visa can only be issued for 1 or 2 years, as opposed to the three year validity on the approval notice.

Also, some customs officers will issue an I-94 that matches the expiration of your passport as opposed to the approval notice or visa. Under the law, this is technically the proper procedure.

You must keep a close eye on your I-94. That is proof of your status in the US and you do not want to overstay that expiration date. If your visa expires before your I-94, that is not an issue unless you need to travel outside of Canada or Mexico for more than 30 days.
